Over and under in football betting

The difficulty is that you need to have a minimum number of fixed sums bet on the football and the coupon’s odds will change significantly. So we recommend it only to those who think that they will be able to do it well.

Betfair’s selections (by show-winner only)

Put simply, you can either bet on a penalty shootout (no score), a draw (both teams scored), on an away goal (in which case the first team to score in the second leg goes through) or a penalty shoot-out (in which case there are no draws and the teams play to a winner).

As ever, the odds and odds-on favourite suggest what are the most likely outcomes, but you have to be careful as both the draw and away goals scenarios are very dangerous. If you’re left in the end with the draw, you’re not going to win that many times. The best odds on the draw are 16-1 and the best odds on away goals are 33-1.

If it goes to penalties, the best odds on first to score are 5-1, while there is no better 5-1 on the away goals score. We are backing Chelsea to go through because of their experience.

If Chelsea win, they’ll also finish top and therefore would be drawn against the team who finishes second. That means they’d probably get drawn at home in the first leg.

That would mean, given their European record, that they’d be slight favourites to progress, which seems to have been reflected in the prices.

The amount you can back for the first to score is 14-1, and the odds-on favourite to win is 11-4, while Chelsea to go through is 5-4.

For Chelsea to go through on away goals, the best odds are 40-1.

As ever, if there is a penalty shoot-out, we prefer to bet on Arsenal to win the game. They are slightly more likely to score at home (based on recent stats) and we know Arsenal fans know what to do with the money. The best odds on the Gunners to win are 20-1.

For those wanting a bit more to lose, Manchester United to win the competition at 50-1 is definitely worth considering. If you don’t fancy either side, then something like 2-1 (for home advantage) or even 3-1 (for the team to score first) seems to be the best bets to follow.
